Welcome to Year 1 where every day is a new learning adventure! Have a look at our blog.
In Year 1 we learn through lots of practical and exciting activities to develop children’s confidence, skills and imagination. We have lots of exciting topics in Year 1; The Enchanted Woodland, Dinosaur Planet, Paws Claws and Whiskers Bright Lights, big city and Rio de Vida. Children take part in lots of wonderful memorable experiences and often have the opportunity to showcase what they have learnt to parents.
Year 1 Termly Curriculum Overviews
During Year 1 we work on helping the children to become independent learners to enable them to be ready for more structured learning as they move through the school.
PE is on Monday and Wednesday so don’t forget PE kits, especially trainers!
Phonics is a big focus in Year 1; it is important in helping the children develop their reading and writing skills. Phonics takes place every morning. In Year 1 we have the Phonics Checker test in the summer term; resources to help children are sent home throughout the year and workshops are available on a Friday morning with Mrs Armstrong for any parents wanting some help. A good website that children can use is Mr Thorne Does Phonics.
Homework- children in Year 1 are asked to practise their spellings and reading every week. 10 minutes every day can really help! Spellings tests take place every Friday morning. When reading with your child it is important to check their understanding or vocabulary and what the story is about. Workshops are also available for help with reading, just get in touch with Mrs Armstrong.
Also have a look at the Home Learning suggestion sheets for some lovely ideas of things that you could do at home with your child to help further develop their learning
