Welcome to Year 2!
In Year 2 we try to make things exciting in all we do, both in and out of the classroom, be it a trip to somewhere linked to our topics or just a change to the way we learn and develop all our skills.
At the beginning of the year we love to visit Skipton Castle in our Towers, Turrets and Tunnels Topic where everybody loves the lights being turned off in the dungeon and the tales of the Long Drop from the past! We then move to ‘Let’s explore the world’ where we improve our geographical skills, learning how to use maps, compasses, and atlases. We compare hot and cold countries, as well as looking at sustainability.
In the Spring term we become ‘Street Detectives’ in a topic which focuses on Gorton's amazing monastery and long history of making almost everything for the rest of the world, including trains, cars, buses and trams. We also look at the importance of Belle Vue as an entertainment centre for Manchester and study the geography of our local area.
The Summer term brings Coastlines, where we hope to get a visit to the seaside! We learn about the physical and human features of coastal regions across the United Kingdom. This topic goes alongside the “Land Ahoy” topic where we learn about famous pirates and explorers and find out about life at sea.
We ask children to practice their spellings every week, ready for the spelling test on Friday. Reading is also really important; we would love you to read daily with your child and check their understanding and vocabulary to ensure they know what the story is about.
Our PE days are Tuesday and Thursday, so on these days we ask children to come to school wearing their PE kits (white t-shirt, black bottoms and trainers).
Please make sure to keep an eye on our blog to see all the exciting things we get up to!
