Welcome to Year 2!
Have a look at our blog to see all the exciting things we get up to!
In Year 2 we try to make things exciting in all we do, both in and out of the classroom, be it a trip to somewhere linked to our topics or just a change to the way we learn and develop all our skills.
At the beginning of the year we love to visit Skipton Castle in our Towers, Turrets and Tunnels Topic where everybody loves the lights being turned off in the dungeon and the tales of the Long Drop from the past! Our topic Street Detectives Topic focuses on Gorton's amazing monastery and long history of making almost everything for the rest of the world, including trains, cars, buses and trams. We also look at the importance of Belle Vue as an entertainment centre for Manchester and study the geography of our local area.
In the Spring term we become Scientists in our Bounce topic, investigating materials and how things work. This is followed by one of the childrens' (and Mr McGowan's) favourites, Land Ahoy which means dressing up as pirates, speaking with a Bristol accent and finding out about the history of pirates, our seas, oceans and continents, using maps to help us. We also learn about famous people who had links with exploring and the sea. In the middle of this we do lots of what we call quizzes to see what we know and how we can improve our skills!
The Summer term brings Wriggle and Crawl, science and learning about the nature outside our class. We research insects and the cycle of life. At the end of Summer we Get stuck in to Muck, Mess and Mixtures where we investigate art, design and materials. This year our mucky experience will be re-invigorating our vegetable garden and planning what and how to grow.
Coming into Year 2 is the next step towards independence when children will be expected to organise themselves, bringing their reading books in on a Monday morning, PE Kit for Tuesday morning and making sure they are responsible for these, along with their jumpers!
Home learning is an important part of Year 2.
Reading at home every day for 10 to 15 minutes, as this develops their reading skills, vocabulary and helps them to come up with ideas for writing. The children also have weekly spellings to learn for Friday's quiz, which also gives them a word bank and further develops their phonic knowledge. In Maths, you child may bring home some practice work related to something that we have covered are are going to cover. Finally the importance of knowing your 2,5 and 10 Times Tables cannot be underestimates, as we use them on a daily basis. Use the Times Table Rockstars website and app for quick, regular practice. Your child will be given a password. In Year 2 the focus is on them knowing the 2,5 and 10 times tables with related division facts, but if they know them confidently, then encourage them to go further.
Home learning is based on key skills, confidence building and how can we overcome barriers to learning. However having fun with learning is essential, so going to Gorton Library, sharing a book by a favourite author or just talking about pictures are all good things to do. We do some home learnng linked to our topics, which give the children a challenge to go and find out things about our amazing world.
