We want your child’s first experience of school to be a happy one and we rely a great deal on your help in settling your child at St. Francis. Have a look at our blog to see what goes on in Foundation Stage.

We promote personal and social development, encouraging children to cooperate, know their own self-worth and show consideration and understanding towards others. Through active learning, children are encouraged to develop the skills they need to move forward confidently to the next stage of their learning.

This stage is called the Foundation Stage and the curriculum is informed by Early Learning Goals. These cover areas of language and literacy, mathematics, personal and social development, creative development, physical development, knowledge and understanding of the world, Religious Education and Information Communication Technology.

Our children always come into school happy and excited every day because they are warmly welcomed with a friendly smile from their key worker. Children are given challenges to complete and we then work on gross and fine motor skills through our 'funky finger time' activities. This is a fun and energetic start to the day which prepares children for the day ahead. During our adult led teaching time, children are split into separate Nursery and Reception groups. Nursery have lots of lively learning focused primarily on developing relationships, number skills and fine and gross motor skills, which prepare them for beginning to learn to write. In Reception the children begin to read and write. Throughout the school day, children have many opportunities to complete independent child led activities through our continuous provision time. This allows children to become independent learners and make their own decisions. The end of the school day always ends with a story or singing time.

Parents are invited in on a Wednesday for a story or a performance from the children and at the end of each term we host a breakfast for children and parents so we can promote the importance of a healthy breakfast and have a relaxed social time all together.
